Online or In-Person Therapy: Which One Is Actually Right for You?
There's a question we hear a lot at New Ground Wellness: Does it actually matter whether I do therapy in person or online?
It's a fair question. And the honest answer is, it depends but not on what most people think.
First, what the research actually says
Let's start here, because there's a lot of noise on this topic and the evidence is clearer than most people realize.
A 2021 meta-analysis examining 57 empirical studies found that videoconference therapy produced equivalent outcomes to in-person therapy. A 2020 meta-analysis published in the Journal of Anxiety Disorders found that online CBT was equally effective as in-person CBT for treating depression and anxiety and the gains were sustained over time.
In other words, for most people, working with the right therapist matters far more than whether you're sitting across a desk or across a screen.
That said, format does matter in specific situations. And knowing which one suits you is worth thinking through carefully.
The case for online therapy
Online counselling has genuinely changed what's possible for a lot of people and not just because of convenience.
Remote therapy removes geographic barriers, shortens wait times, and allows people to access support from the comfort and privacy of their own home. For someone living in a rural area, managing a busy schedule, raising kids, navigating a chronic illness, or simply someone who finds it easier to open up from their own space virtual sessions can make therapy accessible in a way it simply wasn't before.
Online therapy works particularly well for:
Anxiety, depression, and stress, where research consistently shows strong outcomes
People who travel frequently or have unpredictable schedules
Those who feel more comfortable and open in a familiar environment
Anyone who has previously struggled to access consistent in-person support due to geography, cost, or availability
Ongoing sessions with an established therapist when life gets in the way of showing up in person
At New Ground Wellness, we offer virtual counselling throughout Canada which means the right therapist for you doesn't have to be the closest one to you geographically.
The case for in-person therapy
There's something that happens in a room that a screen doesn't fully replicate and it's worth naming honestly.
In traditional settings, therapists can use verbal and nonverbal cues more readily to understand emotional experience and provide timely support. Some therapeutic approaches such as somatic therapy, which incorporates physical components are more naturally suited to in-person work.
Research has noted that patients and psychotherapists often associate face-to-face therapy with qualities like contact, effectiveness, and a sense of reality in the therapeutic encounter. For some people, especially those processing significant trauma, grief, or complex mental health needs, the physical presence of another person can feel essential to the process.
In-person therapy tends to be the stronger fit for:
Complex trauma or PTSD where somatic and body-based approaches are part of the work
People who find it difficult to create a private or focused space at home
Those who benefit from the ritual of physically going somewhere, a dedicated hour that belongs only to them
Anyone who finds the screen creates a sense of distance that gets in the way of opening up
At New Ground Wellness, we offer in-person sessions in Penticton, Vancouver (Kitsilano and Downtown), and New Denver with clinicians who specialize across a wide range of approaches.
The question worth sitting with
Most people frame this as an either/or decision. But the more useful question is: what environment helps me show up most honestly?
Some people are more guarded in person. Others feel a screen puts up a subtle wall they can't quite get past. Some need the flexibility of virtual sessions to actually commit to showing up consistently. Others need the structure of a physical appointment to take the work seriously.
None of these are right or wrong. They're just different and they tell you something important about which format will actually serve your healing.
What we do differently at New Ground Wellness
We don't believe in defaulting to one format. Our intake process is designed to understand not just what brings you to counselling, but how you heal best including which session format is most likely to support the kind of therapeutic relationship that produces real outcomes.
Whether you're looking for in-person sessions in the Okanagan, virtual support from anywhere in Canada, or a combination of both, we'll help you find the right fit from the very beginning.
Because therapy isn't just about finding a therapist. It's about finding the right conditions for you to actually do the work.
