Your Body Knew Before You Did: Understanding Fight or Flight During a Wildfire
You were probably in the middle of something completely ordinary when it happened.
Maybe you were making dinner, putting the kids to bed or scrolling on your phone when the notification appeared: a wildfire nearby, an evacuation alert or an order to leave. Maybe you noticed the smoke first or heard the sirens—and suddenly found yourself searching social media, checking local updates and messaging neighbours, trying to answer one urgent question: How serious is this?
Some people began packing before an official alert arrived. Others waited for the words: Evacuation order. Leave now. You may have responded immediately—or perhaps you froze, unsure of what to take, where to go or how much time you had.
Whatever your experience, you may have noticed something shift in your body before your mind had fully processed what was happening. Your heart began racing. Your breathing changed. Your thoughts sped up—or your mind went completely blank.
That shift was your nervous system doing exactly what it was designed to do: trying to protect you in the face of uncertainty and possible danger.
Understanding what happened in your body—and what may still be happening now—can be one of the most helpful and compassionate things you do for yourself as you begin to find your footing again.
What fight or flight actually is
The fight or flight response is your body's built-in emergency system. When your brain perceives a threat, a wildfire, an evacuation order, the smell of smoke, the glow on the horizon, a structure called the amygdala fires an alarm signal. Within milliseconds, your adrenal glands flood your body with adrenaline and cortisol.
Your heart rate spikes. Your breathing quickens. Blood rushes to your muscles and away from your digestive system. Your vision narrows. Your thinking sharpens around the immediate threat and drops everything else. Non-essential functions, hunger, fatigue, digestion, even pain gets suppressed.
All of this happens in seconds. Long before you've decided what to do. Long before you've called anyone or packed a bag or figured out which road to take. Your body was already moving.
This is not a malfunction. This is survival. And for thousands of years, it worked.
What it looks like in a real evacuation
People who have been through wildfire evacuations describe the experience in strikingly similar ways and most of them are surprised by how their bodies responded.
Some describe moving with a clarity and efficiency they've never felt before, grabbing documents, loading the car, directing children, making calls. No hesitation, no deliberation. Just action. That's adrenaline doing its job.
Others describe a strange numbness. Going through the motions, doing what needed to be done, but feeling oddly detached as though they were watching themselves from a distance. That's dissociation, another protective mechanism. When a situation is too overwhelming for the nervous system to process in real time, the brain creates distance.
Some people freeze. They stand in the doorway, unable to decide what to take. They refresh the emergency updates page over and over instead of leaving. They know they should go but their body won't move. This is the third, less talked about response, “The Freeze” and it is just as valid as fight or flight. It's the nervous system's way of saying: this is too much.
And some people describe feeling completely fine in the moment, moving through the evacuation with surprising calm, only to collapse emotionally days or weeks later, once the immediate threat had passed and the adrenaline had finally run out.
All of these are normal. All of them are the nervous system trying to protect you.
What the research shows
The mental health impact of wildfire is significant and well documented, and it doesn't end when the fire does.
Stress, PTSD, social isolation, and economic hardship have been identified as key issues following wildfires, particularly among vulnerable groups including the elderly and those with chronic illnesses.
The presence of increased particulate matter from wildfire smoke has been associated with increased mental health problems, with research showing that wildfires can lead to depression, anxiety, and PTSD, and that the rebuilding, recovery, and regrouping period is often traumatic too.
While the physical spread of a fire may last only a few days, emotional and psychological recovery can take far longer. Studies following the 2023 Alberta and Nova Scotia wildfires found that participants showed significant levels of poor mental wellbeing, likely major depressive disorder, and likely generalized anxiety disorder in the months following the fires.
In other words, what you're feeling is not weakness. It is a documented, measurable, physiological response to a genuinely traumatic event.
Why your nervous system might still be activated, even now.
Here's something that catches a lot of people off guard. The fight or flight response doesn't automatically switch off when the danger passes. It switches off when the nervous system receives a clear signal that it's safe. And in the aftermath of a wildfire, with ongoing uncertainty, unfamiliar environments, smoke still in the air, no clear timeline for return, that signal may not come easily.
This is why so many people who evacuated feel:
Hypervigilant: Startling easily, scanning for threats, unable to settle. The alarm is still ringing even though the fire is no longer at the door.
Exhausted in a way that sleep doesn't fix: because the body has been running on cortisol and adrenaline, and coming down from that is genuinely depleting.
Irritable or reactive: small things feel enormous. A misplaced key, a difficult conversation, a child who won't stop asking questions. The nervous system is already at capacity and has nothing left to absorb.
Unable to concentrate: the thinking brain goes offline during a threat response, and sometimes it takes time to fully come back online.
Numb, flat, or emotionally shut down: a common delayed response as the nervous system tries to regulate after a period of extreme activation.
These are not signs of weakness or of struggling more than you should. They are signs that your body responded appropriately to something genuinely difficult and that it now needs support to complete the cycle.
How to help your nervous system find its way back
The nervous system doesn't regulate through thinking. It regulates through the body. Here's what actually helps:
Movement. Walk, stretch, shake. Literally shake your hands and arms if that feels accessible. Trauma researcher Peter Levine described the way animals discharge stress after a threat, they shake, they tremble, they move. Humans have the same capacity but we often suppress it. Let your body move.
Slow, extended exhales. The exhale activates the parasympathetic nervous system, the brake pedal after the accelerator has been floored. Breathe in for 4 counts, out for 6 to 8. Even a few minutes shifts the nervous system meaningfully.
Cold water on your face or wrists. This activates the dive reflex and produces an immediate drop in heart rate. It's a fast, accessible vagal stimulation technique.
Name what you're feeling. Not analyze, just name. "This is fear." "This is exhaustion." "This is grief." Research consistently shows that labelling an emotion reduces its intensity by creating a small but meaningful distance between you and the feeling.
Connection. A felt, present, unhurried connection with another person is one of the most powerful nervous system regulators available to us. Not scrolling past someone's update. Not a quick text. A real conversation where someone looks at you and asks how you actually are.
Time and permission to need it. You have been through something significant. The pressure to be fine, to cope well, to focus on the practical, to hold it together for others, these are real pressures. But they are not requirements. You are allowed to not be okay yet.
When to reach out for support
If weeks after the evacuation you are still experiencing significant sleep disruption, intrusive thoughts or images of the fire, persistent numbness or disconnection, difficulty functioning day to day, or an increase in substance use, please reach out.
